Astro Exhibit
2 September 2022

A few years ago an old downtown Santa Rosa motel was refurbished and reopened as the "retro" Astro Motel, catering in particular to visiting bicyclists (of which we always have quite a few, especially around the time of the Grand Fondo).

I noticed in the newspaper this morning that in the wake of the death of a fairly well-known Santa Rosa sculptor, some of her work was being gently transported down from Sonoma Mountain to the Astro for a three-month exhibit in the motel courtyard. Kind of a weird place for showing her sculptures, it seemed to me, but—after phoning the office to make sure visitors are welcome—I pedaled downtown to have a look.

Here's what I found.

Entering the motel courtyard. First view of a few of the sculptures.

Note how the sculptor has clearly delineated most male and female figures, although some seem a little uncertain.

Bookends.

Unsure about this guy.

But this must be Medusa. Check the snakes (with eyes) wrapped around her head.

Close-up of Medusa.

A skinny one.

Another view across the courtyard.

Note the design and colors of the motel. Very retro, or so I'm told.

A female with a baby and a rusty helmet.

Two little ones.

Peeking inside the motel lounge.

Because the Astro caters to visiting bicyclists, in the lounge and available to guests the motel offers a bike workshop stocked with the finest tools. I didn't stay long enough to give the Ogre a tune-up.

This photo (and plug) for Greg and his brother.

On the way home, I went through Julliard Park and paused for a photo on the little bridge.
