Elsie Allen and More
30 May 2022
According to the newspaper, last week a big new mural was unveiled on the outside of one of the buildings at Elsie Allen High School in Santa Rosa. Naturally, I earmarked that as a destination, and today I pedaled down to have a look. Very nice! Also, previously unknown to me, I spotted an older mural on another wall at Elsie.Coincidentally, while I was examining the new mural, a guy about my age pulled up on a bicycle and said, "I read about this in the newspaper and decided to ride over and have a look." What an idea!
On the way back, I detoured through downtown. Surprisingly, part of the security fence around the deteriorating brick wall of the old cannery building was open. Or perhaps ajar. Or perhaps partly manhandled aside. In any event, very inviting. I put the Ogre on my shoulder and slipped in for a couple of photos from an angle I'd never seen before.

That's Elsie, weaving a basket.
Looking "inside" the old cannery building.
There is no longer an inside or outside, only part of the old wall.
Another view.
This angle shows supports on the "inside" of the wall, all that remains of the old cannery.
An older photo (September 2020) showing the "interior" of the old cannery.
This is the side of the wall that's always visible when I pedal out the Greenway, but it's usually impossible to access.
