Saline Valley Road, part 2
6 May 2021

Despite the flat tire and rough road (did I mention sand, rocks, gravel, potholes, and washboard?), the climb up to South Pass was easier than expected. I was tempted to keep going down on the far side, into Saline Valley itself, but restrained myself. I remember that side of the pass as being steeper, rougher, and narrower, so I didn't go much farther.

After reaching the summit of South Pass, I continued onward toward the junction with Hunter Mountain Road, then turned back.

I found a spot where I thought I would have a good view of fighters zooming over South Pass and down into the Panamint Valley. There I waited for awhile with camera in hand, ready to get a cool shot of Ogre and warplanes.

No such luck. Only ravens appeared. I grew tired of waiting.

I finally remembered to check the altimeter clipped to my trunk bag, but at that point I was already part way down from the summit of the pass.

The altimeter and thermometer might not be completely accurate. Or, for that matter, the chronometer. But the price was right.

Not sure what the corral and water tanks are for. Maybe rounding up wild burros?

Dropping back down into joshua trees.

Still no cars or people.

Joshua tree.

Back down in the flats near the car.

There's Old Grumble-Face in his Sahara outfit.

The French Foreign Legion is calling.

The Ogre and I are always very relieved to see the Forester hasn't wandered off in our absence.

Time to head back to Lone Pine and get ready for tomorrow's ride.
