Iron Gate, November 2020
From Hornbrook up the Klamath River: A Photographic Log
21 November 2020

My ace support crew, bless her heart, couldn't bear the thought of Thanksgiving without the grandkids. She decided that heading to Siskiyou County and celebrating the Feast of the Turkey the weekend ahead of the actual holiday would allow us to avoid the virus and the wrath of Dr Fauci. To that end, she rented a cabin for us on the Klamath River in far northern California and we drove north in our automotive bubble with our dog on Friday.

Regardless of the familial nature of the visit, my favorite bicycle also accompanied us. Hey! The Ogre is part of the family bubble, too.

Thus, despite the chilly weather (down to 20° F at night), mountains of smoked turkey, and small children requiring non-stop "horsey rides," I managed a couple of short outings on two wheels.

Here's my tour up the Klamath River from Hornbrook to the dam at the Iron Gate.

As I mounted up and started on my way, these wild horses—in some ways they reminded me of the marauding burros in Death Valley—appeared at the river by the cabin.

My ace support crew snapped this photo as I pedaled away from the cabin.

Lots of frost along the way.

Looking down toward the cabin and river.

Rolling along Copco Road toward the dam.

Still pedaling along Copco Road toward the dam.

Crossing the one-lane bridge at the base of the dam.

Copco dam at the Iron Gate. Behind it, Iron Gate Reservoir.

Still frosty.

Pedaling on ice. Not something I do very often.

Another view of the dam at the Iron Gate.

I pedaled down to the river for a closer look.

Shooting toward the sun, the intense glare and sparkle on the river framing the Ogre blow out the camera color sensor.

Looking down the river.

These folks launched this boat and set out downriver a-fishing.

Now I need to set out downriver, but back up on Copco Road.
