Bike to Wherever Day, September 2020
And back from wherever: A Photographic Log
24 September 2020

I'm retired, so I no longer commute to campus by bicycle. But I still try to participate in "Bike to Work Day."

That might be a global phenomenon, or just in the US, or just around the San Francisco Bay Area. Not sure. But it happens in Santa Rosa every year, and there are always "energizer stations" and goodie bags and free stuff and parties for those who need a little extra encouragement.

In any event, I think it didn't happen on schedule this past spring. If I understand correctly—could be way wrong on this—Bike to Work Day was postponed due to the pandemic. Then it was rescheduled for this month. However, with so many worker bees toiling from home, it was rebranded as "Bike to Wherever Day." And today was the day.

So I made a point of getting a relatively early start and heading up the road to wherever it might lead. That turned out to be Maria Carrillo High School, the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts, Riverfront Regional Park, Windsor, and back home, all on a meandering route. I think my ride qualified as biking to wherever...and back.

Here's what it looked like.

I made a slight detour and pedaled through our nearby high school.

No in-person classes, so no one around.

I liked this mural at the high school.

Farther up the road, at the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts.

I like this permanent piece, "Donuts," but wasn't so keen about the current outdoor sculpture show.

The Ogre hides behind the gate at the entrance to Riverfront Regional Park.

The first little lake in Riverfront Park.

Sparkling water of the main lake in the park.

I enjoyed the solitude, admired the scenery, devoured my lunch, listened to some music, daydreamed, and soaked up pleasant sunshine.

Then it was onward to Windsor, down Old Redwood Highway, and back home.

Musical bonus! Here's what I listened to while daydreaming at the lake, transported back to 1973.

"Orange Peel" by Sopwith Camel from their album "The Miraculous Hump Returns from the Moon."

"Baby smells like orange peel, cinnamon, vanilla.... She smiles like sunrise flowers from Manila...."

It always reminds me of every hippie chick I ever kissed, or tried to kiss, or at least wanted to kiss, in the 1960s and 1970s.
