Sonomarin, August 2020
Sonoma - Marin: A Photographic Log
7 August 2020

Up the road in Yreka important family business was in progress, but in Santa Rosa there wasn't much I could do about it except maybe boil some water.

To pass the time, I drove out to the crossroads known as Two Rock and parked at the church. From there I pedaled toward the coast to Fallon, a tiny patch of habitation with approximately two houses and a broken-down mobile home. From there I meandered up and down rural roads from ranch to ranch, sometimes with a big headwind, sometimes a big tailwind. On this route I crossed between Sonoma County and Marin County several times, which is why I refer to the expedition as Sonomarin.

It was a delightful day to pedal on those quiet roads, but I couldn't spend too much time in the saddle. I needed to get back home and find out how things were progressing in Yreka and discover if my ace support crew had passed out from anticipation and excitement.

One big up and down on the quiet road between Two Rock and Fallon.

Along the road.

Looks like a radiating pattern.

Looking south where I crossed Highway 1 on the way to Fallon.

I hung out at the intersection for about ten minutes on the outside chance I might see touring cyclists heading up or down the Pacific Coast route.

No joy.

The Ogre rests on the bridge over the Estero de San Antonio.

The Pacific Ocean is about a mile from here, but at this point there's no way to get there by car or bike without a long detour.

Looking down on the Estero and bridge where I was a few minutes ago.

Cows in a pasture by the Estero.

I often ride up and over that big hill to the town of Valley Ford—road barely visible in the distance—but didn't go that way today.

Farther along the road, looking at the narrowing Estero.

The wavy surface of the Estero.

Ranch gate.

Pour encourager les autres.

As the flag proves, the wind—as usual this time of year—blew strongly from the ocean. I had a terrific tailwind on the ride back to Two Rock.

Far to the east, Sonoma Mountain barely visible through the haze.

A little side trip along Twin Bridges Road, sometimes referred to as Two Bridges Road.

At the edge of the road.

A little gruesome, but the skeleton so perfectly arrayed caught my eye. It reminded me of the Uffington White Horse in England, or perhaps a scene from Game of Thrones.

Stemple Creek, almost dry in the summer, flows into the Estero.

Two birds in the sky.

Another little side trip, this on Alexander Road.

Fence along Alexander Road.

From here I pedaled back to Fallon Road, then let the tailwind push me all the way to Two Rock. Good day to raise the Ogre's mainsail.

While I was out gallivanting on the Ogre, baby Rose was busy arriving and joining the family.
