One Brick at a Time, May 2019
Downtown Bricks: A Photographic Log
4 May 2019, 16 miles

Janet is right. Northern California suffers from a relative dearth of brick buildings. Why? Earthquakes. Brick buildings tend not to stand up to earthquakes too well. In the big 1906 quake, Santa Rosa suffered proportionally more damage than San Francisco. Practically every brick edifice in town collapsed. Nowadays, most of the brick walls around here are facades of buildings constructed with steel beams.

But bricks can definitely be found, which proved important for the monthly Challenge over at Cycle365.

Thus, today I pedaled to campus and downtown with Ogre and camera in search of photogenic bricks in order to meet the Challenge.

Local branch of Sonoma County public library.

Brick walkway on campus.

Looks like the brick wall of this building on campus has been getting watered.

Memorial bricks on campus.

My friend, Jerry Waxman, professor of astronomy, would appreciate the "Star stuff once again" line.

Jeff, Cap'n Will, and I had our offices hidden away on the third floor in the main library.

It's a wonder the bricks were still standing when we retired.

Another brick wall on campus.

Onward to Macys at the downtown mall.

A few days ago, a mountain lion was captured at this spot outside Macys at the mall in the heart of downtown Santa Rosa.

No big cats here today.

No bricks, but I finally got a photo of this cool tree on the side of a downtown building.

Cars in the parking lot usually block every photographic angle.

Banks seem to favor impressive brick exteriors.

Kitchen entrance at a downtown Mexican restaurant.

The Silent One, says the sign, accompanies the dead to the underworld.

Bricks and ivy.

But not on campus. This is the old Sears automotive building.

Outside the old Sears store, now closed and empty.

Oops, that's a different Challenge.

Part of the fancy brick planter at the entrance to Luther's home and gardens.

More from the entrance to Luther's home and gardens.

Greg, my brick friend sends greetings to your brick friend.

Note that around here our safety-conscious brick friends wear helmets while cycling.
