Hermit, part 2, April 2019
Road to Hermit's Rest at the Grand Canyon: A Photographic Log
14 April 2019, 18 miles
Back to part 1The day was warming up as I pedaled slowly from Hermit's Rest back toward the start of Hermit Road at Grand Canyon Village. Only shuttle buses and bicycles allowed on the road. If you have a permit to backpack the appropriate trail(s), you can get a pass to drive up the road and park at the trailhead.
My ace support crew could emerge any minute from the bottom of the canyon, or it could be a couple of hours. I amused myself snapping photos. Eventually I coasted down to the Village and took a nap in the sunshine on a convenient wall outside our rendezvous point.
Colorado River, part one.
Colorado River, part two.
Colorado River, part three.
Colorado River, part four.
No sign of my ace support crew or the rafts I saw two days ago at Lees Ferry.
Another tree.
That's the Hermit Trail, far below.
My ace support crew is somewhere on that trail, trudging slowly upward with a 30-pound backpack.
I keep looking, but I don't see her.
Another view of the canyon.
Another piece of the river.
Another tree.
Rapids on the river, far below. Anybody down there with a blue backpack?
Maxing out my zoom.
More canyon.
More tree.
Okay, tree and canyon.
Trying to get all artsy.
Almost back to the start of Hermit Road, but still no sign of her.
One more photo of the Ogre and the canyon.
Now I'll cruise down to our rendezvous point and have myself a little nap.
But first, a photo of Old Grumble-Face, taken by a helpful visitor who carried a camera that much bigger than mine.
Meanwhile, there's my ace support crew, deep in the Grand Canyon.
She looks like she's all sad and lonely and she really misses Old Grumble-Face, doesn't she?
My ace support crew, plus a couple of other members of the expedition, on the way down on the Boucher "Trail."
Nine and a half miles of descent like this on day one.
The entire team eventually made it out safely, but they allunderstandablyrequired emergency rehydration.
Want to undertake a guided expedition? My ace support crew, having trekked with them twice, highly recommends TSX. Tell them Mountain Rose sent you.
