Down in the Flood, February 2019
Days of Rain: A Photographic Log
14 February 2019, 17 miles

During some winters, California as a whole receives little rain and snow. That's a problem for plants and animals, but good for bicycling. During some winters, California as a whole receives much rain and snow. That's a problem for bicycling, and sometimes a problem for everyone else. This winter has seen no shortage of rain around here. Too much of a good thing, some might say.

How much? The current series of storms is bringing northern California high winds, downpours, localized flooding, closed roads, mudslides, downed trees, power outages, drowned automobiles, evacuations, and many accidents due to slick highways. Definitely a problem.

But perfect weather conditions for a bike ride!

I haven't been out on a bike for a few days due to the rain, but today I braved the precipitation. Unfortunately, many parts of my planned route were submerged and closed. Nevertheless, I managed to wander around for awhile and snap a few photos. I've also added some rainy day photos from my backyard.

We've seen this place before.

Flatrock, where the Brush River (formerly Brush Creek) flows into the Santa Rosa River (formerly Santa Rosa Creek).

This spot will be completely dry in the summer.

The creek is high.

The creek is very high. Parts of the Greenway are inundated and closed.

On the Greenway, the LHT considers going for a swim, or perhaps whitewater rafting.

This entrance to Spring Lake is closed.

I'll try another entrance.

This much water pouring over the spillway and into Spring Lake is not a hopeful sign.

Yep, this entrance to Spring Lake is also closed.

This seems to be why Spring Lake is closed.

I reckon I won't try to pedal in that direction.

Shortly afterward, with the rain stopped for a few minutes, the sun shone through a gap in the clouds just long enough for me to snap a short-lived rainbow.

With so much rain lately, my pedaling has been very limited. Yesterday I wandered around in my backyard in the drizzle with camera (actually, my iPhone) to take some rainy day photos. Here are a few. Sorry, no Surly LHT or Ogre.
